Hello from the Road – Dubai

18th May, 2017

If you’ve ever said to yourself ….

Gosh I am going to scream if I don’t get out of this plane soon’

Today’s blog is for you.

(Even if you haven’t I hope you’ll keep reading) Because this is all about the benefits of a stopover on lang haul, flights – and how to make the best opportunity out of them.

I’ve just come off a 14 hour haul Sydney to Dubai and can tell you what a sweet relief it was to finally escape from economy seat 28 A. And the fun I’m having visiting the spice souk (oh, that heavenly aroma), checking out the views from the 145th floor of the iconic Burj Khalifa or watching the sun go down over Dubai Creek.

Here is the truth …..

Breaking the journey makes perfect sense on so many levels. What better way to turn the journey into an adventure and there is the added benefit of arriving at our final destination in much better shape.

Even a short overnight break can help your internal clock adjust to the different time zones and give you respite from the pressurized cabin which causes dehydration, swelling and exhaustion. It saves you days battling the after effects of jet lag and puts you on a good footing to enjoy your holiday from the start.

If you didn’t know, from Australia we are literally spoiled for stopover choices thanks to the opening up of new flight routes, code share arrangements and airline alliances.

Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong can still be enjoyed but why not try somewhere exotic – Mauritius, Tahiti or Colombo are just a few options.  If you’re seeking cutting edge, fast pace then there is Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai or to completely immerse yourself in a new culture try Beijing or Delhi.

Here are my top tips for what to look for from your stopover:

1. Go for contrast – If you’re on a whirlwind tour of Europe then seek a stopover with palm trees, pools or spas. If you’re planning a meander through rural France or England then why not stopover somewhere that never sleeps.  Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai spring to mind

2. Seek out a bargain – some airlines include an overnight stopover at no cost on one leg of the journey due to flight connections, others offer great stopover bargains. Look for hotels that offer late check out if your onward flight is leaving in the evening. Having a shower and relax after a day of sightseeing puts you in a good headspace for a night flight

3. Go somewhere new – stopovers give you a taste of what is on offer. You may be surprised at how much you can accomplish in 24 hours – and it will definitely help you to decide whether to return for an in-depth look later

4. Stay near the airport – if you are on a short stopover, arrive late at night or have an early flight out then chose  hotel near the airport.  It can take the stress out of the flight the next day and let you refresh and revive in style
