Hikes that might just blow your mind

17th August, 2017

Huffing and puffing, feet sore as you climb the ridge, dreaming of a G&T at the end, you have agreed to a gentle beachside hop with friends. Alas! Your stamina is not what it once was …. Then your friends point out the magnificent views, idyllic beaches, clear blue waters, complete with whales in the distance frolicking in the sun. It’s that moment that makes it all worth it, you remember how much fun a trek can be. No wonder walking is the new black in travel!

Read on the 4 Top Treks Around the World to get you in the mood:

# PICTURE POSTCARD WALK

The walk: Cinque Terre, Italy

Why we love it: Arguably one of the best-known walks in Europe, this trail winds its way along dazzling coastline just south of the Italian Riviera town of Portofino through five fishing villages accessible only by train.

Length: 18 kilometres; it can be walked in stages by staying at any of the hotels and guesthouses dotting the region. Companies such as Headwater Holidays will organise accommodation, provide maps and walking notes and transport your bags between hotels leaving you free to really experience the area.

Top tips: If you only have time to walk one section, the path from Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare has views encompassing all five towns. Book well ahead as this is a popular walk especially in summer months.

# WELL-EARNED VIEW HIKE

The walk: Routeburn Track, New Zealand

Why we love it: With soaring mountain peaks, huge valleys, waterfalls and jewel like lakes, this track located on New Zealand’s South Island links two national parks with spectacular scenery. It can be done as a group led experience or independently

Length: Taken over 2-4 days you’ll see fewer people on this trail than big brother Milford tack located nearby.

Top tips: If you don’t think you are up to the full 3-day adventure, do a section as a taster. Heads up you’ll be back to do it in full!

# ANCIENT HISTORY TREK

The walk: The Kerry Way, Ireland

Why we love it: It’s the most famous signposted trail in Ireland for a reason and takes in some of the most dramatic scenery in Ireland, stunning coastline and colourful coastal villages. The walking route officially starts at Killarney but you can join at any number of points along the way.

Length: 214 kilometres, circling the Iveragh Peninsula (aka the Ring of Kerry). It commonly takes up to 8-10 days to complete.

Top tips: Towns are nicely spaced offering a variety of accommodation and restaurants. Take a day off in Cahirciveen to visit Skellig Islands for a once in a lifetime experience you will never forget. These remote rocks in the Atlantic Ocean are home to an ancient monastery, a bird sanctuary and truly spectacular views.

# ALPINE RAMBLE

The walk: Kandersteg, Bernese Oberland, SWITZERLAND

Why we love it: This is a walk not to miss, starting with a ski lift journey from Kandersteg into the mountains above the village where a path leads high above the north shore of the lake giving an unrivalled panorama of Oeschinensee. The turquoise lake is set like a jewel in an antipheter of glistening rock which at points rise sheer from the water.

Length:The short walk itself takes only a few hours, but you can make a full day of it by wandering around the lake and soaking up the beauty of the area.

Top tips: Try for a summer’s day when you can cool off from your exertions in the lake. Alternatively, relax with a hot chocolate at the lake restaurant before hiking back into Kandersteg. The area itself is covered with trails, making Kandersteg a perfect base for up to 7 days walking on a self-guided or group guided basis.
